Whether you grow a huge backyard spice garden, a small spice garden on your windowsill or a beautiful Aerogarden, you will quickly learn the satisfaction achieved from such a noble project. Your own natural herbs and healthy spices will increase the quality of your cooking. Not only will using garden herbs and spices make you look and feel like a better cook, your food will taste great. Many people today fill their Spice Racks with natural, organic and healthy spices grown right at home.

Going Green With Spice Gardens
Spice gardens are more than just a novelty these days, they are part of a new way of life for many people all over the world. More and more people are realizing ‘going green’ isn’t just another yuppie feel-good term to put on a bumper sticker. Living as green as possible is simply the responsible thing to do. Things like growing your own spice garden and using your own home-grown herbs and healthy spices is a very small price to pay just for doing the right thing.

Think about the waste and refuse saved as more and more people eat from their own home gardens. The packaging eliminated alone is huge benefit in itself. the spice garden ecological benefits are many. Less transportation from moving those bulk spices stuffed into manufactured packages by the pallet full. Crammed in to shipping containers and trucks destined for locations worldwide. That equals a lot of energy and pollution. We could go into the whole issue of what it takes to manufacture all that packaging, build all those pallets, cut all that wood and a ton of other logistical issues like the transportation of all of those things but you get the point… Growing your own spice garden helps the planet with a positive impact on our economy.

Growing your own Spice Garden For Savings – Or Not?
The truth is you may save money by eating your own home grown spices but not enough to be the sole reason. First, we don’t tend to spend a large portion, overall, of our income on spices. Second, with newer technology and the systems growers, manufacturers and processors use, store bought spices aren’t really expensive. So if cost savings alone is the driving force behind the idea of growing a spice garden you may be somewhat disappointed. Don’t worry, there are many other worthwhile reasons to dig into the earth and growing a spice garden.

Health Wise Benefits Of Your Herb And Spice Garden
Eating your own food grown naturally at home can offer fantastic health benefits. Using natural fertilizers is a great place to start. Avoid chemical fertilizers if at all possible. Things like coffee grinds, compost, manure, and even grass clippings and mulch make great natural fertilizers for your spice garden.

Ingesting less preservatives, chemicals and herbicides can help your health and perhaps even prolong life a little. Another healthy factor to consider when deciding if you want a spice garden is shelf life. I wouldn’t even want to know how long those packaged spices purchased at the store have been sitting on shelves and warehouses. Even if they have been processed and blended with a ton of preservatives I feel much better cooking with fresh spices right out of my own garden.

The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that growing a small herb and spice garden in your backyard or a little indoor spice garden in your window doesn’t make you a tree hugger or a nut. Like I said, an indoor spice garden is one of the easiest ways of doing our part to help the economy while getting a ton of enjoyment at the same time. A spice garden can make you feel better, look better and make your food taste better. Really, what more is there than that? Who knows, you may decide to expand your garden of spice with a vegetable garden some day too.
